GUIDELINES FOR YOUTH VOLUNTEERS
General Requirements
- Volunteers must be 12 years or older and under 18 years of age.
- Volunteers must be willing to work a total of 8 hours of service time. If there is a waiting list, volunteers are limited to 20 hours. Volunteers needing less than 8 hours may volunteer at special events.
- Youth Volunteers younger than 15 years of age usually work no more than 3 hours at a time.
- Youth Volunteers who work 8 or more hours will be invited to the Volunteer Pizza Party in August.
- Volunteer positions are limited and on a first-come basis.
Procedures for Volunteers
Time Sheets
- Volunteers must sign in on a volunteer time sheet. These are kept in a binder at the Children’s Reference Desk at Central. If you work at a branch or other department, ask where the volunteer timesheet is.
- At the beginning of each month, volunteers are to fill out a new time sheet and sign it. Total the hours at the end of the month. Volunteers are responsible for keeping track of their hours on their time sheet. A timesheet must be filled out at the end of every shift.
- Upon request, the volunteer will be given a letter confirming their total amount of hours at the end of volunteer service.
Identification
- Volunteers must wear a volunteer badge at all times while working in the library.
On The Job
- Please wear closed toed shoes.
- Volunteers must always be friendly and helpful to library customers. However, volunteers do not answer customer questions or requests to help customers locate information. Volunteers must always refer customer questions to the Children’s Reference Desk Staff.
- Volunteers should not work behind or at the Children’s Reference Desk.
- Listen to instructions carefully and carry out volunteer tasks as instructed by the librarian.
- You may not work in back room areas on weekdays after 6:00 p.m., nor on Saturdays or Sundays. Children’s staff must be present when you work in the back room. You must never use the staff paper cutter. You will not be given a security code to enter staff area unaccompanied.
- You may be asked to shelve materials. Library staff will get materials carts from staff areas and return them for you.
